Marketing: a lot of bad press
Just recently, I heard marketing blamed for the death of a character on a popular television crime series. 'Marketing' gets the blame for publicity stunts, promotional excesses, poor judgement and just plain bad taste.
And yet, marketing is an investment in our businesses that none of us can afford to omit.
On our marketing page, we've mentioned plastic pens. I have boxes of them from every conceivable business and organisation from every promotional and business event I have ever attended - so many that now I'm very selective about which pens I will accept.
If you feel the same, you probably won't be taking up any offers from marketing promotions companies for innovative gadgets.
Why do people hate marketing?
Is it the pens, rulers and sticky notes cluttering up our desks? Or is it that the marketing we've done in the past doesn't seem to have done us any good?
Here are some of my thoughts:
- some of what is called marketing is product promotion
- some marketing is weak and superficial
- some marketing lacks lustre, common sense, and joy
- some marketing is off-the-shelf, one-size fits all
- some marketing is a rip-off
What do you think? I'd like to know.
